Jayaraman, Dr. M Balamurali Krishna, Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman and others, to share their knowledge and experiences with the students who get to see and learn the other side of these great artists, like their simplicity and humbleness. They enjoy staying with them sharing the very same facilities and become a part of the family considering themselves only as senior students of the art.
In 1999, Sangitha Kalanidhi designate, Vidwan Sri T.K. Govinda Rao Sir, had given a concert at the Music Academy in which VR was blessed to accompany him on the violin. All the musical stalwarts of that time, including his guru Lalgudi G. Jayaraman, were present to witness the concert and pay their respects to their fellow musician. VR was very nervous when he saw them all seated in the first row as soon as the curtains unfurled . Sri Govinda Rao sir sensed VR’s nervousness and instilled confidence in him by saying “don’t worry, play well.” With this, VR gained more confidence and the concert became a success. On that special occasion, accompanying a maestro, in the presence of stalwarts, at the Music Academy, was a memorable experience for him in his musical journey.
Memorable incident and Tribute to Dr. BMK
While on an American tour with Dr. BMK VR’s baggage did not reach him in time unlike BMK’s bag. Spontaneously BMK asked VR to open his bag and pick one of his best dhothi and jubba for that evening’s concert. While VR was hesitant and reluctant BMK picked his best MAYIL KANN DHOTHI AND SILK JUBBA and handed them over to VR . After the concert when VR returned it back to him after a dry cleaning BMK had asked VR to keep to himself which VR still treasures it ” As his prized possession in fond memory of BMK”.
