O V SUBRAMANIAN’S (OVS) CENTENARY FUNCTION ORGANISED BY MADHURAM ARTS FOUNDATION

O V Subramanian was born on 17th November,1916 to Shri Veerasawmy and Sow Seethalakshmi at Ombathveli in Tanjore. OVS lost his father when he was just two years. OVS’s elder brother O V Rajagopalan took care of him and seeing his interest and aptitude in him for singing he enrolled him to pursue Carnatic Music in Annamalai University.
It was in 1938 OVS graduated as Sangeetha Bhooshanam after being well trained by Sathur Sabesa Iyer, Tiger Varadachary and Tanjore Ponniah Pillai. From 1944 to 1954 OVS was running Thyaga Brahma School of Music in Tanjore by serving officially as the Principal where hundreds of students learnt music from him.
In 1954 he migrated to New Delhi and served as a Music Teacher for Shanmugananda Sangeetha Sabha. Later he took to private teaching and settled down in New Delhi until his retirement and was a well respected and well known in the Carnatic Music Circle in Delhi.
Apart from teaching he has also performed in Many Sabhas like R R Sabha, Music Academy Nadopasana, Krishna Gana Sabha, etc with leading accompaniments like Lalgudi G Jayaraman, V V Subramanium, Venkataramanujam on the violin, T K Murthy, Umayalpuram Shivaraman, Tanjore Murugubupathy to name a few on the Mirudhangam.
OVS was conferred “Acharya Choodamani” by the then Honourable Governor of Tamilnadu during Gokulashtami Festival Music organised by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, in 2004.
OVS had trained several musicians & elevated them to the concert level who have taken music as their profession like Kovai Padmanabhan, Ichangudy Ramurthy, A V K Rajasimhan, Gayathri Sathya to name a few. OVS has also trained his sons O S Thyagarajan, O S sundar and O S Arun and daughter Padmavathy Natesan who have earned a name for themselves in their chosen style of music.
OVS has also trained his Grand Daughters Sow Aparna Balaji,Sow Sudha Raghuraman and Sow Vidya Srinivasan who are well known musician and music teachers today.
OVS lived a contended and complete life for 94 years, and reached the Lotus Feet of Lord Rama on Ekadesi day in the early hours on 8th July, 2010.
OVS has been a role model for many and an inspiration for entire OVS family.
