The Panchali Sabadam of Mahakavi C.Subramania Bharati was a monumental work in Tamil Literature which has as its base the pivotal Game of Dice incident in the Mahabharata. Bharati wrote and published the first of the two-part minor epic in 1912 while living in exile in the French territory of Pondicherry to escape British persecution. It was intended as a political allegory of the ongoing freedom movement.

It was also symbolic of the struggle of Indian women who suffered indignity and oppression in the name of tradition and the timeless theme of confrontation between good and evil. Yudishtra, the eldest of the Pandavas, coerced into playing a game of dice by Duryodhana and Sakuni. Stakes and loses his kingdom, his wealth, his brothers and finally his wife, Draupadi. Enraged at the indifference of those present in the assembly to her plight, Draupadi takes a pledge to avenge her ignominy with the blood of the Kauravas. The Panchali Sabadam of Bharati set a new benchmark in Tamil poetry with its simplicity, lyricism and evocative language with music by Dr. Rajkumar Bharati and the choreography is done by Smt. Jayanthi Subramaniam.
